I tested this circuit by removing the MOSFET and triggering pin 2 manually. I get the same effect. This circuit is pretty easy to assemble and works pretty well (for me atleast). The flyback has 20 turns of primary (any scrap wire will do). The circuit works by making the mosfet turn on and off very fast with the help of the timer, the capacitance of the capacitor (on pin 2 of NE and ground) decides the switching speed. A single transistor is probably going to drive the mosfet worse than the itself. If you are need to use a driver between the mosfet and then you are better off with a push-pull (totem pole) driver configuration that can sink/source current equally strong in order to turn on/off the mosfet quickly (again only if needed) or even better.
